A Verb or A Gerund?
Learning Objective: At the end of the session, the students are expected to be able to differentiate a verb from a gerund by using them in sentences.
What is the difference between a verb and a gerund?
1. Verb - is an ACTION word.
Example: study
Sentence: I am studying now.
In this case we used a be verb am + the main verb study +
-ing to give us a Present Continuous Tense of the VERB.
Ok, let's give more examples.
2. Gerund - is verb form that always ends in -ing. It is used as a NOUN.
Example A: studying
Sentence A: Studying English is fun.
In this example, we used studying as a noun. This is the subject of the sentence. The verb is is.
Example B: studying
Sentence B: I like studying English.
In this example, we used studying as a noun. This time, it is the object of the sentence.
