Japan has four main islands and more than 6,800 smaller islands. The total land area of Japan is 377,719 square kilometers.
Seventy-three percent of this land is mountainous. The tallest mountain is Mt. Fuji, which is 3,776 meters high. The largest lake is Lake
Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. The Shinano River is the longest river and is 367 kilometers long.
Japan has many hot springs and volcanoes. Japan has four seasons. The mountains separate Japan into two major weather areas. The
western side, along the Japan Sea has more wind and snow and is colder in the winter. The eastern side, along the Pacific Ocean, has more
sunshine during the year and milder winters.
The rainy season begins in early June and continues until about the middle of July. The weather in Japan is affected by many
typhoons, but usually only three or four reach the islands and cause damage.
