"Animals of the Safari"
[A] COMPREHENSION::
Read the passage.
Animal Friends
-1-
In the open grass plains of Africa, zebras and ostriches often walk along and graze together. For a long time, no one understood why the two types of animals were fast friends. Recently, scientists who study animal behavior found an explanation for this unusual friendship.
-2-
Zebras and ostriches, the scientists found, help to protect each other from the lions that prey on them. The zebra has long ears to pick up sounds from far away. However, a zebra is short and cannot see far. The ostrich has a long neck and two keen eyes. It can see a long way. However, it does not hear very well as it does not possess large ears. So, with the ostrich watching and the zebra listening, the two types of animals have better chances of escaping from their enemy. Both can run faster than a lion once they gather speed. Their common enemy cannot catch them if it is spotted or heard in time.
