The Niagara Falls
-1-
Th Niagara Falls in North America is one of the world's best tourist attractions. It is known as the "Honeymoon Capital of the World". Each day, more tourists and newly-married couples visit the waterfalls than any other tourist attractions in the world. It is also one of the world's largest cataracts.
-2-
The Falls, as the Niagara Falls is often called, is actually made up of two waterfalls. As the Niagara River flows northward from Lake Erie, it is split into two by Goat Island, a small island in the river itself. As the river approaches Goat Island, it hasten more swiftly. On both sides of Goat Island, the river leaps from the overhanging shelf of rock in a thunderous roar. Thus, Goat Island separates the Falls into the larger Horseshoe or Canadian Falls on the west, and the American Falls on the east. The Falls is not a very high waterfall - it is only about 150 feet high. However, it is very wide, and each minute, nearly half a million tons of water pours over its edge into the whirlpool below. Beneath the edge or "lip" of the waterfalls, tourists can walk into large caves. From these caves they can see the waters of the Falls falling out and over their heads.
